When I started this article, I had a few questions and some provocative issues I wanted to present. However, as I started writing, and writing usually has a life of itself, it started to appear several other questions and issues I felt I had to address. As a result, the article became too long and it is now going to be published in three parts (“Anatomy of disinformation and fake news”, “How we made it to this point and the role of online platforms”, and “Why and how we should regulate social media and criminalize fake news”). …

The still-president Trump was banned from several social media networks since January 6, when he incited a mob to violently invade Congress in a self-coup attempt, which was one of the worse treasonous acts ever in this country. Many are discussing the merits of the ban, if it was censorship or a fair application of the social media’s community guidelines — every single social network has one. Arguments, for and against, are inflamed and even foreign figures offered their piece of mind.

I also have some ideas about all this.

1. That probably was a request from the FBI and…

Tech has a pattern: after a seminal breakthrough, innovation is always incremental for a while. Until a new breakthrough occurs. Take the iPhone or VR or autonomous vehicles (and something that will come up new and truly innovative). After the initial awe for the new and deeply interesting breakthrough, innovation goes somewhat limited, stagnant for a while and it is okay. The average human, the consumer, takes some time to fully assimilate new technologies and adopt them widely. Humans, after all, are those who will make the decision to adopt or not a new product. …

Today is the Web Summit’s day three, the last day of the annual mega tech conference in Lisbon, Portugal and, as it became the norm since March 2020, the event was online (Watch Day One here). As always, the quality of the event was great and its speakers, all inspiring. In fact, the Web Summit probably reached a much larger audience in 2020 than those who were able to travel to Portugal in previous years. The exchange is happening strong and the Web Summit just announced an expansion to Japan, Malaysia, and Brazil. But despite attracting the attention of many…

When George Floyd called his mama while dying, he called every single mother out there. I don’t know a word that can precisely describe this feeling of powerlessness and despair that I felt. Listening to him, a grown-up man, calling his mama when he was suffering that atrocity imposed on him should be more than an immense sadness and despair to every single mother on this planet: it is the literal, visceral, horrible concretization of our worse fears. When Mr. Floyd was calling his mama, he was calling me, too, and I couldn’t do anything to help him, a boy…

Let’s talk about value. How do the startups operate? They create a product and as soon as they have an MVP, a minimum viable product, the minimum value a product can have, they launch it in the market and, through testing and iteration with their customers, they modify the product to meet optimal performance and results. How do people like it? How do they interact with it? How can we improve the user experience? How to improve the product? Constant feedback and improvement make the product better and this is an on-going process through the duration of the product’s life.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.’ — Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947

There are predators and preys in the wild. People, however, express horror when we apply this idea to humans, but, unfortunately, some humans behave as such. The difference is that in the irrational animal world there is nothing that…
